Sweet & Sour Meatballs

We had a busy weekend getting the house ready for my parents visit to Atlanta – lots of cooking and catching up on post holiday chores.  We love having visitors but our small place makes it difficult to host – I think we will be upgrading to larger beds in the near future.

One of the many items I cooked this week included Greg’s grandmothers Sweet & Sour Meatballs.  She has run a Kosher household her entire life and these sweet meatballs are one of her many specialties.  They are a great crockpot appetizer for winter parties.

Ingredients
  • 1lb ground beef
  • 1lb ground turkey
  • 2/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup minced onion
  • 1tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 1/4-1/2 cup of water (depending on consistency)
  • SAUCE INGREDIENTS
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbs hot & sour sauce
  • 1 10.5 oz can Tomato sauce with mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup water
Instructions
  1. Combine all ingredients except sauce and shape into meatballs (I like mine to be slightly larger than golfballs). Heat up a skillet, spray with non-stick, and brown the outside of each meatball. Sauce: While browning meatballs, combine the remaining sauce ingredients and simmer in a large pot or crockpot add in meatballs once browned and simmer for approximately 1 hour.

Here is the special sauce Greg’s grandmother uses- but I can’t find it anywhere but New York.  So any Tomato sauce will work- mushrooms are a bonus.
